Our Stud
History
Stone Lea Poll Dorsets is home to stud flock 3682 - a legacy born in 1987 by Todd’s great uncle, Laurie Lamont. Originally a Dorset Horn flock, it soon transitioned to Poll Dorsets in line with industry preference. When Laurie scaled back the stud, Todd - fresh out of school and eager to carry the legacy forward - took over in 2007 with just 30 ewes. Since then, the stud has grown steadily and strategically, currently comprising 200 mature ewes and 60 ewe lambs.
Breeding Objective
From the outset, our breeding objective has been clear; to produce moderate-framed rams with moderate muscle content and high early growth, designed to thrive in commercial systems. In recent years we have been focusing on dressing percentage. As commercial breeders its simple for us, we don’t chase trends or fades, just the profit drivers.
‘We have been buying Stone Lea rams for the past 6 years and are very pleased with the their performance. Excellent lambing percentages with high yields’. Lachie, Naracoorte SA
Lambplan
Since implementing Lambplan in 2008, we have committed to rigorous performance recording and full pedigree tracking. We tag at birth, collect comprehensive data at weaning and post-weaning stages, and leverage ASBVs to guide our breeding decisions. Our current genetic targets aim for balanced, commercially beneficial traits including 15 PWWT, 2 PEMD, -0.5 fat, and 0.5 BWT.
As commercial producers ourselves, we understand the importance of real-world results. Every ram we breed is trialled within our own prime lamb operation, ensuring we offer only proven, high-performing genetics to our clients. Our aim is to deliver lambs that are fast-growing, high-yielding, and consistently sought after by processors.
